Seeking Medical Treatment after a Car Accident – Part 2

If you’ve been involved in a car accident, you may be compensated for both the property damage and the physical injuries that resulted from the accident. As discussed in our previous blog post, a major part of the compensation for physical injuries will include any reasonable costs incurred from your medical treatment. When seeking medical treatment after a car accident, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Treat Thoroughly

As we pointed out in Part 1 of this series, it is not wise to exaggerate your claim in hopes of a bigger settlement. However, you should thoroughly treat the injuries resulting from your accident. It is important to follow the treatment plan prescribed by your doctor. This will typically include diagnostic tests like x-rays or MRIs as well as physical therapy. Don’t let your treatment lapse. Extended gaps in your treatment do not look good to either the insurance company or a jury. If your injuries are really bad and require medical attention, it would be reasonable to assume that you would be seeking regular treatment for them. There is no set timeframe to consider for how often you need to treat for your car accident injuries. If you follow your doctor’s treatment plan and avoid long pauses in treatment, it will allow for a quicker review of your claim.

Don’t Let Your Financial Circumstances Keep You from Seeking Treatment

Unfortunately, since many of our clients do not have health insurance, this is a common problem. There are health care providers who will treat you without payment upfront. In these cases they will file a lien against your settlement. This means that at the conclusion of your case, before you receive any of the funds, the doctors will be paid for their services. Such an arrangement is often the only way for those without health insurance to get treatment for their injuries. If you need medical treatment, but do not have health insurance, The Lawyers of Brown & Roberto can help connect you with these resources.
